WHY:  Telangiectasia /Spider Veins are small, dilated blood vessels which discolor and disfigure the skin. They may occur anywhere, but are especially common on the lower extremities. No form of treatment eliminates these vessels completely, but laser therapy and sclerotherapy have been helpful in eliminating these dilated capillary blood vessels in specific cases.  Medium veins are usually treated with sclerotherapy (injections) and large veins with surgery.

ABOUT:  There are several treatment methods utilized separately or in conjunction, depending on the problem.   Evaluation with ultrasound and/or other tests may be recommended initially.  Treatment or surgery is arranged for another day.

Sclerotherapy is used for small and medium size veins: medication is injected into veins. Patient goes home with and wears compression dressing or stockings for 3 or 4 days and does no strenuous physical activity for two weeks.

Another method is vein ligation and stripping which is done for larger veins: under local or general anesthesia.  The problem vein(s) are removed through small incisions.

For treatment of small spider veins, usually in face, we might use a procedure call radio cautery. No dressing is necessary.

Laser or PL (Intense Pulsed Light) Photocoagulation may be the best treatment for small veins (telangiectasias, spider veins, superficial capillaries) of the face and legs. Wearing a compression garment (Ace or stockings) is recommended for 2-3 days after leg treatment. You can do strenuous activity after 2 weeks.

For Sclerotherapy: Limited activity resumes immediately. No strenuous physical activity (sports, working out) for 10 days.  May take 3-6 months for final results. No residual pain. Retreatment may be necessary.

Patient goes home with and wears compression stockings or dressings for 1 week and does no strenuous physical activity for 2 - 3 weeks.

For vein stripping: Limited activity after 1-2 days, no strenuous activity or prolonged standing for 2 weeks. Walking is encouraged. Discomfort is controlled with mild medication. Results are evident immediately but multiple small scars take 6 - 12 months to mature.

For radio wave treatment: Unlimited activity resumes immediately. Final result may take 3-6 months. Retreatment may be necessary.

Laser or IPL Photocoagulation: May resume routine non-stressful activities immediately, strenuous physical activity after 2 weeks. Usually requires 2 or 3 treatments to obtain optimal result.  After the leg procedure: must wear compression stockings for 2-3 days, resumption of strenuous physical activity after 2 weeks.

RESULTS: Improved small cosmetic appearance of affected areas.  For those experiencing leg pain, their symptoms will be relieved.

Brachioplasty and Thighplasty

WHY: This procedure is done to tighten upper arm and thigh tissues and eliminate loose, flabby, drooping skin and subcutaneous tissue resulting from large volume weight loss or post bariatric surgery.

For leg rejuvenation, see the previous section about liposuction as well.

ABOUT:  These procedures are performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia.  Long scars are left on the inside of the arm or thigh.

RECUPERATION & HEALING: The patient goes home with the extremity wrapped in a compression dressing.  Discomfort is easily controlled with mild medication.  Most bruising and swelling usually subsides within a 2 to 3 weeks, but several months are required for all swelling to resolve.

RESULTS:  Thinner, tighter and more youthful looking arms and legs.
